Brown Polo
About Us
Brown Polo is a student run club sport at Brown University. Our administrative tasks are handled by an executive board along with a faculty manager, and each of our teams has a student captain. We hold practices at Newport Polo farm where we are coached by Minnie Keating. Practices and home games take place at an oceanfront arena in Portsmouth, RI, approximately 35 minutes south of campus. The club has a varsity team that competes through the United States Polo Association and a club group that is open to Brown students of all levels. The varsity team is working to become more competitive through competing in the United States Polo Association Intercollegiate program. We also offer club polo lessons to all levels of riders, even if they have never been on a horse before. We pride ourselves in having members start at the club level, without any prior riding experience, and rise to be skilled members of the varsity team! We provide polo opportunities for people of all experience levels. Brown Polo is separated into a Club-Varsity division and a Recreational division. Club-Varsity consists of our more advanced players who compete in games and USPA tournaments. We offer both a men's and women's team.

Our Recreational division is open for people who are new to polo, or aren't ready for the time commitment of being on a competitive team. You can come as much or as little as you like, and practices are slower paced and focus on the fundamentals of riding and polo.

We offer lessons to Brown Students of all levels. Regular attendance is required for Club-Varsity members, and Club-Recreational players may attend lessons at their level as frequently or infrequently as they like. Lessons and games take place about 35 minutes from Brown’s campus, and we all carpool together. Lessons are held throughout the year whenever the ground is not frozen.

Newport also offers Brown Polo a work-to-ride option that helps cover the expensive cost of lessons for college students. This means that you will be able to ride without paying in exchange for work like helping out around the barn (tacking up, rolling polo wraps, and other barn chores). Many opportunities are emailed out, but contact us if you are interested in more!
